Where To Begin - Choosing a Name
A well-planned web site can reduce the need for search engine
optimization services that you have or will learn about as you go
forward with your web site. Just as location is important as you
plan to open a store in your local community, even so, location is
critical in opening a business in cyberspace. Location for a web
business is all about search engine ranking.
With the growth of the internet, there are thousands of businesses
all competing with your business for prime location - the first five
slots in a search engine return. The search engine receives a
request when a customer types in key words in order to find a product.
The search engine ranks the thousands or perhaps hundreds of thousands
of domains that might be relevant to the request in the order best
suited to provide what the customer wants. One of the prime ways
to increase the ranking of your business on the search engine is to
choose a good domain (web) name for your business.
Let me give you some examples. There is a company in California
called Luster Forever that sells jewelry online. While this is a
catchy name for a jewelry store and might help drive business to it if
it was listed in the yellow pages, someone searching for jewelry online
will probably never type in either "luster" or "forever" in the search
engine. The key to having a good online name is to include seach
engine terms in the store name. For best results, place your top
key word as the first of the name. For example, if I were going to
open an online wedding photography business, I might call the business
"Wedding Photography of Las Cruces". Google statistics show that about
100 people a month search for "Las Cruces Wedding Photography" and a
1,000 people a month search for "Las Cruces Photography". Adding
"professional" or "affordable" to the name might also help you with your
search engine rankings.
